So, uh...

We challenged the Gymleader today, and...Well, we...

We, uh...

Man, we got mowed down like grass. _{[An indiginant "Loom!" from offscreen.]} Oh, uh...no offense, Chuck. _{["Skipskip."]}

I knew we'd be in for a tough battle, but...Man! Even Joe here was totally freaked the whole time. _{[The camera pans down to a nearby Spinarak, who skitters away a little at the sudden attention.]} I guess a bug would be scared of a bird, though. And his butt's been totally frowny all day. _{[He zooms in on the pattern on Joe's abdomen, which is currently in the shape of a huge frowny face.]}

And Rocky's...

Uh.

He ain't takin' this loss so well. He was real confident goin' in to it, but...he's kinda depressed, I think. I...kinda get how he feels. A loss like that can really take it outta ya. Y'know? Especially after workin' as hard as he did.

But, uh, anyway, anybody got any trainin' methods they think would help besides battlin'? Maybe if I can get him back out there, he'll start feelin' better. Usually works for me, anyway.

First of all, what type is Rocky, and what level is he?

Uh, he's level 35 and he's a fighting type.

That's probably why. Fighting types are weak against flying.

Wait...

S-So you're sayin' that some types have like, a disadvantage to other ones?!

Every type does. Flying types are weak to electric, ice, and rock types, and they're strong against bug, grass, and fighting.

All of 'em...?

Maaaaan, this Pokemon thing is gettin' pretty complicated...

Dude. People can do that?!

Well... me and my Pokemon race each other a lot! It's a perfect training method, dude-- always seems to help 'em get ready for a big battle! They get faster, stronger-- heh, the works!

Oh, and don't forget power naps! [Yup, this is the perfect method in Dash's mind. Sleeping and running ALL THE TIME. And well... It seems to have worked well enough thus far!]

Hey, racin' might help a lot, actually! 'Specially since Rock is pretty competitive. Maybe just joggin' ain't enough.

...Power naps...? You sure about that?

Then I say you try it out! It's pretty much guaranteed, heh! It's what I do, and I beat Falkner in no time! [Except not really. Dash, you are not an expert-- stop pretending to be one.

And she nods confidently.] Naps never hurt anypony! And taking lots of 'em between training sessions keeps your team well-rested and all that.

Hey, yeah, I never thought about that. Ain't no point goin' into a fight if you're too tired right off the bat, I guess.

Gym leader?

Yeah. It's kinda weird. In a bunch of the towns, there's a guy with like, real strong Pokemon and if you beat him in a battle, you get a badge to prove it!

It's a real big deal here, I think.

Where are these leaders?

Uh...

I ain't been real far yet or nothin', but there's one here in Violet! Think there's another in the next city, too. Azalea!

All three of those weak are weak against bird types. Didn't you know that?

Well its kind of obivious with the grass and bugs.

I can't really fault you on using the fighting type though. It would have be slight effective against the Honchkrow.

I...actually didn't know about all that type stuff. It all sounds real complicated...

I wouldn't have guessed Fighting was weak to flying types. I guess it would be kinda hard to punch a bird, but...

you didn't It was all in the manual. [Killua didn't read his until he got left cherry grove.] Its not really complicated. Most are easy to tell.

Yeah Hochkrow is flying and dark. Dark is weak against fighting. It would have work a bit better than the other two.

I guess that's the logic with that last one.

I...skimmed it. _{[Reading? When there's dudes to fight? Forget that!]} Really. Guess I'd better start payin' better attention...

...you didn't read it at all did you.[it was a statement not a question] Paying to you opponent is the most important thing in a fight.

Remember to use your pokédex more it will tell you what types a pokémon has.

Tell me about it. It used to be real easy to figure out my opponent's tells back home to figure out what they were doin, but it's different with Pokemon, y'know?

Oh! Hey, yeah! My Pokédex! I forget about that thing sometimes!

I guess it is but its kinda stupid to rush in without the facts.

Just use it every time you see any new pokémon see.

...But those Pokemon wouldn't be that good against Falkner. They're all weak to flying-type moves, some of them might even have a huge weakness. Maybe.

Evolutions, types, weaknesses...Man, this whole Pokemon thing is turnin' out to be real complicated!

...How about I bring you to Goldenrod for heaps of extra training and stuff? My girlfriend wouldn't like me just hanging out in Violet for ages. And I have bad memories of there.
